Our philosophy recognises the environmental and social benefits of trees and the need for proper care of trees in both the rural and urban landscape. Despite our expertise regarding the removal of trees we are committed to the conservation and care of trees for the benefits of the environment and people alike. We actively promote sensitive tree maintenance and preservation wherever possible where alternatives to tree felling and removal are practicable.

Alternative prescriptions to tree removal such as crown reduction, removal of hazardous limbs, crown thinning and pruning can encourage good health and vigour in trees that otherwise show signs of stress or pose a threat to persons and property.

Inevitably trees may succumb to disease, damage, stress or may simply stand in the way of permitted development or cause damage to property in which case we provide a safe and efficient complete tree removal service.

We have an Environmental Policy Statement in place which prospective clients may view upon request. This statement outlines our commitment to protecting the environment from pollution and waste during the course of our tree work operations.

Many trees are specifically protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPO's) or fall within the protection of a wider Conservation Area.

Permission must be sought from the local authority when planning to engage in tree surgery or removal operations on such trees. Heavy fines and penalties may be incurred when carrying out work without proper consent from the local planning department or tree officer.

Alex Howden is experienced and able to liaise with the relevant authority when negotiating work proposals on protected trees.

Other protection may be afforded to wildlife that depends on certain trees for habitat. All bats and their roosts are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act. It is also unlawful to take or destroy an egg laid by a wild bird and this includes destroying nests with eggs during the course of tree surgery.

Important hedges may also be protected by the Hedgerow Regulations. Again, the local authority should be contacted prior to any proposed removal operations.

Separate controls exist for forestry and these are managed by the Forestry Commission.
